TOP 5 BIM Tools & Trends you Should Watch out this Year.

TOP 5 BIM Tools & Trends you Should Watch out this Year.

In recent years, Building Information Modeling, otherwise known as BIM, has grown in popularity with professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction. This is mainly due in part to the efficient tools it gives AEC professionals in the planning, designing, construction, and overall management phases of buildings and infrastructures. By gaining popularity on various fields it creates various “BIM Tools” to optimize your project and to gain better insights.

BIM has unequivocally become a necessity for construction in almost every developed and developing country. As we all know BIM plays a major role in providing crucial project information, And with the increased popularity in recent times these are the “Top 5 BIM Tools & Trends” we should watch out for before doing any project using Building Information Modeling.

  1. COBie (BIM Tools, Plugin)

COBie stands for “Construction Operations Building Information Exchange” it’s a subset of BIM and focused on providing asset data. COBie is the format of information exchange only.

How you can get most from open standard BIM (i.e Cobie)

Looking at Plan, Elevation & Section,

  • Mental Model or section visualization
  • Everyone will be discussing the items they will be needing to know about
  • We get a good understanding what every other person meant by their own drawings
  • More drawings now then even before, Because it’s just so easy to print them all, Designers are the only one who are required to deliver tons of paper
  1. 4D, 5D, 6D & 7D BIM (BIM Tools)

BIM is assisting the AECO industry to reduce delays and costly overruns, implementation of more advanced 5D BIM tools can also avoid potential litigation. A 3D digital model of the planned construction is produced to allow design issues to be resolved before building even starts; more data can be analysed alongside the model to include scheduling and cost information thus avoiding costly delays dues to clashes as well as expensive reworking, this is 4D BIM. For a complete visualization of the project, 5D BIM considers cost, schedule and spatial design for the entirety of the project from conception to demolition to everyone involved in the project.

  • 6D-BIM tool helps perform energy consumption analysis. The utilization of 6D-BIM technology can result in more complete and accurate energy estimates earlier in the design process.
  • The 7D BIM tool allows participants to extract and track relevant asset data such as component status, specifications, maintenance/operation manuals, warranty data etc.
  1. 3D Printing

3D Printing technology has gained a lot more popularity in AEC Sector. It has a great potential of creating valuable and accurate building elements in a very short span of time at a very low cost. Apart from dominating manufacturing sector, it’s also been used in interior, architectural and medicine industries to name a few. We can use 3D Printing to create prototypes of Prehab materials & Manufacturing Components and submit it to construction partners.

  1. Augmented Reality/ VR

With a superb success of Augmented Reality on mobile devices this technology now gain the advantage of diversifying its use towards BIM (Building Information Modelling) industry.

AR Technology for BIM (Building Information Modelling) has made a great effort on providing BIM Model data hands free in 3D. By enhancing BIM with AR Technology has proven how we can understand about the built environment.

  1. Green Building Effort

In today’s world of pollution, greenhouse gases, energy footprints, and more; tools like this are no longer sitting around on the shelf. With the worlds collective environmental problems, particularly climate change, being a severe global issue; just waiting for the bright minds of today, and technology, to concentrate its efforts on solving this sobering challenge. BIM has the power to change all of this when optimized for today’s sustainable construction. The AEC now realizes how vital BIM for sustainable building design. The AEC also recognizes how badly needed such a powerful tool is and can be. Assisting in this global issue, the aims of this BIM Tool are leaning more toward sustainable building design. The future of building information modelling is taking many steps to solve these issues.

There are many ways to work on a software but if we find the right tool we can explore the software even better. So here are some interesting handful Solidworks 2019 tips and tricks, Now you can explore now while working on SOLIDWORKS.

  1. USING “S” Key:

You can use “S” key to easily reach to your favorite tools at your pointer eliminating the typical searching for the tools through various menus. By pressing the “S” key from your keyboard while working in SOLIDWORKS; opens up a shortcut bar consisting of various tools. Tools available in the shortcut bar depend on the environment in which you are working wiz. Sketching, Modeling, Assembly as depicted from images below.

  1. Dimensioning Arcs/Circles from Tangent points:

Need to dimension an Arc/Circle from tangents points is just a click away. While linear dimensioning mode active, select the entity from which you need to add dimension and then press-hold “SHIFT” key and click on the circumference of the Arc/Circle; you will get your required dimension. You can also select the Arc/Circle first and then the entity from which you need to add dimension. The key-point in selection is you have to use SHIFT key while clicking on the Arc/Circle for selection.

  1. Knowing your Tool path:

Finding a location of a tool can be sometimes a little bit annoying for a novice, pressing “S” key two times activates the search bar. Simply enter the tool name keywords you are looking for; a list of tools will be displayed with a symbol of goggle on its right. Click on that symbol, SOLIDWORKS will direct you to the tool by following the sequential pattern to invoke a tool.

  1. Show/Hide Body and Parts:

Working with Multi-body part or an assembly and need to temporarily hide a body or a part. Hover the cursor over the part or the body you need to hide temporary and press the “TAB” key, the selected part/body will be hidden. To unhide the body/part, move the cursor to location of the hidden part/body and press and hold the “SHIFT + TAB” key. However sometimes it is difficult to find the location of the body/part. Press and hold “CTRL+SHIFT+TAB” all the hidden body/parts will be shown in translucent state, click on the body/part you need to show.

  1. Mouse Gesture to Invoke a Tool:

Most sought-out shortcut for invoking a tool in SOLIDWORKS is the “Mouse Gesture”. Press and hold Right Mouse Button and then drag the mouse to show a wheel type structure in the graphics area containing tools. Release the Right Mouse button on the tool you need to invoke. The tools displayed in the gesture will depend upon the environment you are working in. You can also add or remove tools in the mouse gesture as per your feasibility.

What is Scan to BIM Services or Point Cloud to BIM ?

What is Scan to BIM Services or Point Cloud to BIM ?

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has become one of the most promising developments in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries, and fundamentally it is changing the way the construction industry works. In recent years, the industry has shifted from traditional two-dimensional drawings, drafts, and designs to 3D visualizations. And worldwide has adopted the BIM concepts and technologies of Building Information Modelling and there is an upward demand for the digitalization of the existing building stock.

“Scan to BIM Services (popularly known as Point Cloud to BIM) referred to the process of 3D laser scanning a physical space or site, to create an accurate digital point cloud of the structure and using scans BEM software, bridge the gap between a separate digital point cloud and one that can be used inside the Autodesk Revit platform. That representation can then be used for designing, assessing progress or evaluation options.”

Scan to BIM is a technology that came as a breakthrough in the construction industries as it is accelerating rapidly as it provides a faster, captures dimensions, volume quickly, efficiently, a highly detailed and accurate structural profile for capturing survey data critical for refurbishment or retro-fitting existing projects.

Point clouds resulting from scan data are massively powerful for analysis on their own. Converting scan data into BIM models is customarily a three-step process: First, from different scanning stations, multiple scans are captured from. Second, data from multiple scanning stations is stitched together in what is commonly known as the post-processing or registration stage. Next, CAD or BIM software can be used to author object models while referencing the point cloud.

It is clear that Scan to BIM is the future of AEC industry and produces high definition scanning has practical, time (faster than 2D drawings) and cost-saving applications especially at the initial stages of repositioning projects and increase the accuracy of project information.
